Viettel, a Vietnam-based telecoms operator, plans to invest $1bn in a 3G mobile phone network in Tanzania.
The mobile telecoms sector in east Africa’s 2nd biggest economy has grown rapidly over the past decade. The growth has been driven by demand for 3G mobile services. In Tanzania there are about 29m mobile users, according to the country’s telecoms regulator.
“Viettel will invest $1 billion in telecoms and other services in Tanzania, hence making Tanzania the second country after Peru to receive its state-of-the-art telecoms technology,” the Tanzanian President’s office said in a statement. The company will offer low-cost smartphones and provide free internet services to public sector entities like schools, hospitals and offices.
Viettel is expected to launch its mobile services in July 2015 and will compete with the four other main operators: Bharti Airtel, Zantel, Vodacom Tanzania, and Tigo Tanzania. The other operators – TTCL, Benson and Smart – have a very small market share.
