According to the Times of India, the Indian government “has given an in-principle approval for induction of nearly 12,000 personnel in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police” [India Announces 54 New Outposts on Disputed Border]. On Thursday, China’s defense ministry expressed concern over the plans. The 54 new border posts along China’s disputed border seems as a step too far to accept without any reaction.
India lost a brief war in 1962 against China and the border has remained unresolved since. The two countries cannot even agree on the location of the Line of Actual Control.
Last September, India relaxed limits on building roads and military facilities within 100 km of the disputed border.
The move came as Chinese President Xi Jinping visited India. Despite the deep military distrust between both countries, analysts see growing trade and business ties.
“We hope that the Indian side can work hard to maintain the peace and tranquillity of the border region, and not take any steps to complicate the situation,” Chinese defense ministry spokesman Yang Yujun said.
